NEW ORLEANS —
Hurricane Ophelia formed Wednesday in the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
Ophelia is a Category 1 hurricane with 75 mph winds. The storm is moving east at 3 mph, the National Hurricane Center said in an update Wednesday afternoon.
Ophelia is the 10th hurricane of the 2017 Atlantic season.
“Since it isn’t clear exactly how strong Ophelia is, the intensity forecast is low confidence,” National Hurricane Center officials said. “All of the intensity guidance indicates that strengthening is likely for the next 24 to 36 hours.”
Center officials said the hurricane is forecast to drift northeastward over the next 24 hours. Ophelia will then run into an approaching deep-layer trough that will make the hurricane accelerate toward the northeast.
Ophelia is forecast to track northeast through Monday.
More information about the hurricane can be found online.
