An “extremely malnourished” 5-year-old girl was found locked inside a small closet of her North Carolina home with burns, scratches and bruises about her body.

Randleman officers were requested to check the child’s welfare on Tuesday by her grandmother after there were reports she was being physically and mentally abused.

Officers went to the girl’s home and when officers arrived, they found no vehicles in the driveway and it appeared no one was at the residence.

Officers repeatedly knocked on the door with no response from inside the residence. They then began calling the girl’s name thinking she may be inside the home alone.

Once officers began yelling the girl’s name, they could hear her respond to them.

Officers asked the child if she was “okay” and she distantly stated “no.” They then asked if she needed help, she responded saying “yes.”

Due to exigent circumstances and fearing for the safety of the child, officers made entry through a window on the front porch. Once inside the residence, officers found the girl locked in a 2-foot by 4-foot closet under a stairway. The girl had no food or water and appeared to be extremely malnourished with burns, scratches and bruises about her body.

The girl was taken out of the residence where officers had a daycare employee, from where the child had stayed in the past, waiting so the child would see a familiar face and feel safe.

No one else was found in or around the residence.

The child was removed from the scene and taken to the Randleman Police Department where officers met with Randolph County Department of Social Services employees.

The child was turned over to DSS employees and the child was taken to Randolph Hospital and later transferred to Brenner Children’s Hospital.

The child’s father, Adam Byrd, 33, and child care provider, Crystal Carnahan, 34, both of Randleman, are charged with assault with deadly weapon serious injury, intentional child abuse – serious physical injury, and negligent child abuse – serious physical injury

Byrd and Carnahan are being held in the Randolph County Jail on $350,000 bail.

The investigation is ongoing.
