Participants climbed a combined total of 110 stories, the number of floors in the twin towers

On Sunday, firefighters and members of a community in Portland, Maine climbed a total of 110 stories at 1 Monument Square to honor the 343 members of the New York City Fire Department who gave their lives trying to save others on Sept. 11, 2001. Each flight of stairs they climb represents a floor in the twin towers.

The Portland Fire Department and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation organized the climb.

Everyone who participates received a photo ID of one of the firefighters who died on 9/11.

Proceeds from the event benefit the FDNY Counseling Unit and programs provided by the NFFF to support the families of the nation’s fallen firefighters, including those in Maine.
