Some people aren’t too excited with the thought of sitting in the dentist’s chair, but a few lucky veterans are excited for the opportunity. Today, My Dentist in Van Buren is providing free dental care to a handful of retired servicemen and women.

The free service stems from a recent Facebook campaign. Submitted stories were chosen by the staff at the office and a lucky group of veterans were chosen. One of those retired servicemen is Bob McKimmons. He served in the army for over 20 years – traveling all the over the world on duty assignments.

Bob came very close to serving in Vietnam and he remembers the harsh treatment of veterans returning from Asia in the 70’s. He said it was a whole lot different than what happened following World War II. “You saw all the patriotism in World War II after all the guys came back. You saw the John Wayne movies and you thought that’s what America was,” McKimmons said.

He thought the heckling and protesting of returning military was wrong and that something needed to change. After participating in the Van Buren Veterans Day Parade, he witnessed kids waving flags and beaming with excitement. After seeing that, he says there’s a new generational awareness about the sacrifices of our veterans.

Dentistry work isn’t something that is affordable for all veterans. Christopher Larson, a dentist at the My Dentist office, says the work is meant to help those that otherwise wouldn’t be able to pay for it on their own. “They don’t have dental insurance, don’t have cash, and have a hard time being able to afford the dentistry that they know they need and that they want,” Larson said.

The care varies from patient to patient, but includes anything from comprehensive exams, crowns, and dentures. Dr. Larson say the dentistry work is all a donation in the ballpark of $10,000.
