Cards and packages are arriving at a Boston hospital by the cartload, helping the holiday season to truly be the most wonderful time of the year for a young cancer patient.

Ruby Mae Millea, a 4-year-old from Swampscott, asked the world for holiday mail after hospital staff set up a mailbox outside her room. Nurse Kathy Zerrip explained that she got the idea after Ruby began exchanging notes with her oncologist, Dr. Michael Kelly, and she spotted the mailbox in a store.

“I was waiting to get a prescription and I saw their Christmas decor and there was a little mailbox and I said, ‘Oh, I need this mailbox!'” explained Zerrip.

The response was enormous. At least two carts full of cards and packages arrived for Ruby at the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center in Boston on Monday alone.
