Historic Main Street in Downtown Van Buren has been transformed into a movie set.

Currently, Main Street is covered in dirt to resemble the early 1900’s as crews shoot the movie “Riot Act”.

Decked out in western costumes, nearly 100 cast, crew members and extras are making the movie.

“It’s a turn of the century thriller that involves a murder, love and vengeance,” said Lauren Sweetser.

Sweetser is the leading actress and she is from Fayetteville, Ark.. The movie’s screen writer, Devon Parks, is from Van Buren.

“There are western sets everywhere,” Sweetser said. “He (Parks) and I both live in Los Angeles and when we were deciding where to take this we thought; why don’t we bring it back to our home state.”

While Main Street is closed to through traffic, the nearby shops are open and people can watch as scenes from the movie are being shot.

“They should do more of them (movies) down here,” said Paul Lampro.

Shirley Marsh said, “I just love the way they keep the western towns like Van Buren and Fort Smith.”

“We’re trying to move a few antiques and we have a whole store full of them,” Carl Gross said. “Most people like to park right in front and come inside.”

Gross and his wife own Spinning Wheel Antiques and Collectables. He says some people aren’t sure if the shops are open on Main Street since it’s covered in dirt and due to the road closed signs.

“It slows us down but thank goodness it doesn’t last but about 3 days and then it’s all over,” said Gross.

Most business owners told 40/29 News they do not mind the temporary dirty accommodations to help keep Historic Main Street in the spotlight.

“It’s good to be back and it’s just a perfect setting,” Sweetser added.”We’re so excited to be here.”

Riot Act is expected to be released sometime in April. The executive producer told 40/29 News the movie will play in several theaters across the region.

Thursday crews will begin cleaning up the dirt that covers Main Street.
