Despite opposition from one of the league’s most powerful owners, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has signed a new contract, according to multiple reports.

ProFootballTalk reports that a source with knowledge of the situation said a memorandum has been sent to all league owners that a “binding contract extension has been signed.”

ESPN confirmed the Goodell’s extension, which comes during a tumultuous season defined by player protests and the harsh response from fans and even President Trump.

Goodell’s tenure has been noted by other major controversies such as the league’s handling of head injuries and punishments over domestic abuse and other crimes.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, considered by some the second-most powerful figure in the NFL, pushed back against Goodell’s contract process and had some support, but it appears that the league’s Compensation Committee had its way.

The position has been a lucrative one for Goodell, who has earned more than $200 million since 2006, according to ESPN.
