The NFL said President Donald Trump was “not accurate” when he suggested that Commissioner Roger Goodell said he is demanding all players to stand for the national anthem.

Seemingly in response to a letter from Goodell to team executives in which he said “everyone should stand,” Trump in a Wednesday morning tweet said “It is about time that Roger Goodell of the NFL is finally demanding that all players STAND for our great National Anthem-RESPECT OUR COUNTRY.”

But the NFL quickly released a statement apparently clarifying Goodell’s message and countering the president without directly naming him.

“Commentary this morning about the Commissioner’s position on the anthem is not accurate,” the NFL said. “As we said yesterday, there will be a discussion of these issues at the owners meeting next week. The NFL is doing the hard work of trying to move from protest to progress, working to bring people together.”

The statement also said Goodell met Monday with players from the Miami Dolphins, law enforcement and community leaders.

Players will also be at next week’s meeting in New York.
