According to a report from Rogers Police, Melissa Garcia Rivera was arrested after an eight month old child she was watching died.

She is currently being held in the Benton County Jail without bond.


The report says the child was brought to Mercy Medical Hospital by the fiance of a the child’s babysitter. The child was deceased upon arrival. Medical staff said the child had a 100.5 degree temperature and her clothes were soaked in liquid, believed to be sweat.

He told officers he was asleep when Melissa Garcia Rivera woke him up and told him the child was not breathing. He said he attempted CPR but could not get her to breathe. He told police Garcia Rivera was so panicked she could not call 911, so he drove the child to the hospital.

When police interviewed Garcia Rivera, she initially told police she had laid the child down for a nap, and when she returned she was not breathing. She later told police she was frustrated with the child because they wold not go to sleep. She said she initially laid a pillow and a blanket over the child’s lower body. When the child pushed up, she said she threw a second pillow on top of the first one.

A day later, Garcia Rivera reached out to police and told them she thought the officer used techniques to make her say something that wasn’t true. She said she covered the child with a blanket, with only the ear and cheek exposed and used the pillows to lay next to the child.

The medical examiner told officer the autopsy was inconclusive at the time, pending toxicology.
