Just six weeks of physical activity – “short bouts of interval training over the course of 20 minutes” – drastically improved subjects’ “high-interference memory.” This type of memory helps people recall visual differences, such as distinguishing one’s car from another that’s the same color, make and model.

“Improvements in this type of memory from exercise might help to explain the previously established link between aerobic exercise and better academic performance,” said Jennifer Heisz, assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology and lead author of the study.

The findings could help the battle against Alzheimer’s and dementia in older adults. There are more than 5 million people in the U.S. who have the debilitating disease, and it’s currently the sixth leading cause of death.
