Three inmates were injured in a disturbance that began last night at 11:00 p.m. at the Cummins Unit, located in Grady, Arkansas, according to a release from the Arkansas Department of Correction. It is unclear, at this time, the level of injury suffered by the prisoners.
Here’s is the full release from ADC:
Last night at approximately 11:00 p.m., correctional officers at the Cummins Unit in Grady Arkansas, began responding to a disturbance in a single housing area within the unit. An as yet undetermined number of inmates were involved in breaking windows and damaging surveillance equipment within the housing area/barracks. Correctional officers were able to regain control of the situation. Three inmates sustained injuries during the disturbance which required that they be transported to area hospitals for treatment. No correctional officers were injured.
Investigators from the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division responded to the unit following the incident and will be conducting an investigation. The Department of Correction will be conducting a parallel internal investigation.
The Cummins Unit has a capacity of 1,876 inmates, according to ADC’s website. It is not clear the number of single housing units in any ADC facility.
Within the last two months, there have been two reported breakouts at the Maximum Security Unit located in Tucker Arkansas. One involved three shots fired by a guard after inmates escaped from an isolation area and during a second six inmates took keys and a Taser from guards. Both of those incidents were blamed on inadequate fencing by ADC Director Wendy Kelley.
