According to WRIC, police were called to a residential area of Petersburg just after midnight for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers found Elwood A. Humphries dead in the driver’s seat of his tow truck.

He was working for River City Recovery, a towing service. Co-workers say Humphries was attempting to repossess a vehicle when someone killed him simply for doing his job.

Humphries was a father and recently became a grandfather.

“The only thing I could say when I got the call was ‘Oh my God, oh my God, I can’t even believe this has happened,’” one co-worker, who didn’t wish to be identified, said. “It just rips inside you because you know it could have been you. You could have been the one out there.”

She believes Humphries was ambushed — before he had a chance to flee.

“I don’t believe that he probably had the chance, because that’s just the type of person,” Humphries’ co-worker said. “We all know him. We know he would just leave, so I really, truly in my own heart believe the man had no clue.”

Petersburg police arrested Anton B. Robinson, 20, in connection with Humphries’ death.

Robinson has been charged with first-degree murder.

A GoFundMe account has been created to help Humphries’ family pay for his funeral expenses.
