President Donald Trump is calling on communities to recognize a deadly epidemic and says the nation will end the crisis.

Problems with opioid prescriptions and heroin continue to claim lives across the country. Last year, 64,000 Americans died last year through drug overdoses, most due to opioids, according to the White House. That’s more than the number of deaths from auto crashes and gun homicides combined, the president’s opioid commission says.

“Too many families know the enduring personal, emotional, and financial harm caused by prescription opioid and heroin addiction,” a statement by the president says. “To the men and women who are currently seeking or receiving treatment and to those who are in recovery: We stand with you, we pray for you, and we are working every single day to help you.”

Trump is asking communities to observe the week with programs, ceremonies, religious services and other activities that raise awareness about the epidemic.
