Hot Springs Police investigated a 5 vehicle entrapment injury crash at the west end of the Lake Hamilton Bridge on Airport Road last night around 10PM that closed the bridge and backed up westbound traffic to the HS Airport.
It took me several minutes to reach the edge of the scene. All 4 lanes on the bridge were occupied with wreckage and evidence. I stayed on the east end of the scene for the hour I was there.
Evidence at the scene included 5 crashed vehicles and a free standing engine in the middle of the highway. 1 sedan sustained major front end and driver’s side damage, 1 SUV sustained major front end damage that sent the entire engine into the middle of the highway. 1 large SUV appeared to have serious front end damage. Damage to the 4th vehicle was not visible from my position. The 5th vehicle had been parked on the side of the highway and appeared to have suffered the least amount of damage out of the 5 vehicles involved.
Several people were injured in the crash. At least 3 LifeNet Ambulance Crews and the EMS Supervisor responded to the scene. There was talk of the LifeNet Air Crew being dispatched, but that plan changed. All patients were transported to the hospital by ambulance.
Hot Springs Fire & Rescue Troops responded to the scene quickly. There was talk of at least 1 person trapped in the wreckage. If they had to extract people from wreckage, it all happened prior to my arrival.
70 West Fire & Rescue Troops also responded to the scene to assist. They took care of business and blocked traffic on the west end of the scene.
The Garland County Sheriff’s Patrol assisted with blocking and turning around traffic on the bridge prior to the scene.
Several wrecker trucks were called to the scene. Ernie’s Wrecker Service took charge of and removed at least 1 vehicle from the scene.
