Allegedly Refuses To Leave House..Meth In Sock; Felony Arrest – GARLAND COUNTY

Garland County Sheriff Patrol Deputy Cogburn reports the following:

On 10/01/2019 at approximately 05:00, I Deputy Cogburn, responded to the 7500 block of Airport Road with Corporal Hawthorn in reference to a disturbance.

Upon our arrival we were met outside by the complainant who stated her ex-boyfriend was in her house and he refused to leave.  The complainant also said her ex-boyfriend was drunk and had her car keys and would not give them back to her.  She was asked by Cpl. Hawthorn if her ex-boyfriend lived at the residence and she stated he did not.  At that point she opened the front door to the house so we could go in and speak with the ex-boyfriend.

Once inside the house Cpl. Hawthorn and I saw a white male sleeping in a chair in the living room.  Cpl. Hawthorn woke the individual up and after a brief moment of confusion identified himself as James Harris.

James David Harris, 51, of Brownsville Springs in Greers Ferry – allegedly found with meth and a pipe after refusing to leave his ex-girlfriend’s house.

At that point I contacted dispatch and asked them to check Mr. Harris for warrants.  Cpl. Hawthorn then asked Mr. Harris if he lived at the residence and Mr. Harris stated he did not.  We then explained to Mr. Harris that the complainant wanted him to leave and he had to go.  We walked Mr. Harris to the front door and waited there to make sure he did not have any warrants.

While waiting on dispatch I noticed an odd shaped bulge in the right sock of Mr. Harris near his ankle.  When I asked Mr. Harris what was in his sock he stated “Oh, that’s my meth.”  He then reached for his sock and pulled out a folded piece of paper and dropped it on the floor.

Cpl. Hawthorn detained Mr. Harris and picked the piece of paper up.  I opened the paper and inside was a small plastic baggie containing a crystal like substance.  Mr. Harris stated that the substance was methamphetamine.  Cpl. Hawthorn then conducted a pat down of Mr. Harris and during the search a clear glass pipe fell out of Mr. Harris’ shorts onto the floor.

Mr. Harris was taken into custody and transported to the Garland County Detention Center.  While at the detention center I weighed the methamphetamine and its total weight was 0.9 grams.  Mr. Harris was advised that he was being charged with Felony Possession Of A Controlled Substance and Felony Possession Of Drug Paraphernalia, with a bond amount totaling $5,000.
