Story by Arkansas 911 News Chief Editor Paul Maddox
Garland County Sheriff’s Patrol Deputy Tatum was on patrol in the area of the bridges on Highway 7 South around 4AM Tuesday Morning when he found a white Cadillac traveling on a public roadway with a tail light violation.
Dep. Tatum turned and went to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, but it sped off and fled from the deputy. The pursuit was very short. The Cadillac quickly turned into the parking lot at Fisherman’s Wharf and headed for the boat ramp in the far corner of the property. The car came to a stop, people jumped out and ran into Lake Hamilton.
Other sheriff’s units headed that way to assist. GCSO K-9 Sergeant Kellar was among the back-up units to arrive. He and Aton were ready to go as soon as they hit the scene, but the female juvenile was caught very quickly at the shoreline of a gated condo complex next door to where the suspects entered the water. The male juvenile was found a short distance from the female. He was in the lake, under a boat dock. The temperature of the December air at the time was 36° Fahrenheit. Both juveniles were arrested.
LifeNet was ordered to the scene to check the juveniles, due to the risk of possible hypothermia conditions due to the extreme cold weather. They were checked out, warmed up and cleared for booking at the scene.
The disposition of the juveniles and any possible charges are unknown.
Ernie’s Wrecker Service took charge of the suspect vehicle and removed it from the scene.
