The body of a man found in the back of a vehicle that fled from a traffic stop in Garland County early Tuesday morning has led to the discovery of a crime scene at the Montgomery County residence of the driver, Sheriff David White said in a news release posted on Facebook early Wednesday morning.
White said he was contacted on Tuesday by the Garland County Sheriff’s Office regarding a body found in the back of the vehicle.
“The driver of the vehicle and the victim are both residents of Montgomery County. Garland County Sheriff’s Office requested Sheriff White to check the residence of the driver to see if it was a potential crime scene. Upon arrival, it was determined the residence was a crime scene,” the release said.
“The Arkansas State Police were requested to work the crime scene. The driver is currently being held at the Garland County Sheriffs department. Foul play is suspected and further information will be available upon further investigation,” the release said.
Garland County sheriff’s deputies found the body of a white male inside a car that fled from a traffic stop early Tuesday morning after the driver wrecked it, then fled on foot and climbed to the top of a nearby building.
The driver, Keith Ashlock, 58, of Pine Ridge, was charged with a felony count of first-degree criminal mischief, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and misdemeanor counts of fleeing in a vehicle and obstructing governmental operations, each punishable by up one year in jail, and fleeing on foot.
A news release from the Garland County Sheriff’s Department said the investigation was “in its preliminary stages and we expect more charges to be forthcoming.”
The body was sent to the state crime lab for a positive identification and to determine the cause of death.
The release said a sheriff’s patrol deputy attempted to make a traffic stop on an unlicensed Cadillac on Highway 7 south shortly after 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, but the driver fled from the traffic stop and crashed through the gate at Hamilton Pointe Condominiums, 5000 Central Ave.
At that point, the driver, later identified as Ashlock, fled on foot but was soon located on top of one of the buildings and taken into custody after he was “talked down” by deputies, the release said.
The body was found during a search of the vehicle for inventory purposes. Sheriff’s investigators were notified and the crime scene secured for their arrival.
