On June 20, 2019 at 10:25 pm Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office received a call stating that two boys ages 7 and 9 along with their golden lab had wandered away from their campsite near Albert Pike just before dark. The caller stated that they lost verbal communication just after dark as the boys stopped responding when the parents yelled out to them leading them to believe they got turned around in the dark and went the wrong direction. When deputies arrived on scene they were informed that the 9 year old boy was a type one diabetic and would need to eat soon.
Montgomery County Chief Deputy Will Brakefield quickly assembled search teams and got people in the woods looking for the two boys. In the early morning hours Sheriff David White got in the helicopter with the Army National Guard to search from the air.
Just after daylight on Friday June 21, 2019 the two boys and the dog were located as they were making their way back towards camp. Both boys were checked out by medics at the campsite and were found to be perfectly fine just a little scared. The two boys stated that when they knew they were lost they found a spot and sat with their dog until daylight as their parents had always told them to do if that situation ever happened.
