Employees at a local bank contacted the victim of a forgery case that occurred in January 2019.  This forged check was shown to the victim.  It was for the amount of $480.  This check was allegedly written in January 2019 for a washer & dryer.  The signature line was forged to show the name Marie McCruden.  The victim advised that this account was shared between he and Ms. McCruden.  He also advised that Ms. McCruden’s checkbook had been stolen at an unknown time in the past.  Ms. McCruden is deceased.

The bank teller refused to cash the check, contacted the living victim connected to the joint account and then Hot Springs Police became involved.

HSPD Detective Rines reviewed the bank’s surveillance tape during the period that the forged check was allegedly presented to the teller.  Det. Rines was able to identify the suspect as Ikaika Kona Aneuber, 37, of Clairmont Street in Hot Springs, and swore out a warrant for his arrest.

Off duty Hot Springs Police Officer Chapin says that he witnessed an aggravated assault with a vehicle used as the weapon on Albert Pike Road last week.

Hot Springs Police responded to a hit & run crash in the area of Albert Pike Road and Parson Street.  Prior to arriving at the crash, HSPD 911 Dispatch notified responding officers that the suspect vehicle might be in the 400 Block of Airport Road.

Officers arrived at the scene of the crash and met with the victim.  The occupants of the victim vehicle allegedly stated that they pulled out onto Albert Pike Road and were struck in the rear of their vehicle.  After contact, Off. Chapin and other witnesses say that the suspect vehicle (gold 2006 Toyota Camry) allegedly did a u-turn, drove back to the victim’s vehicle and allegedly rammed the driver side with the front of the Camry.  The witnesses reportedly say that the suspect got out of her Camry, started cussing, threatening to fight and then drove off.

At the same time officers were meeting with the victim and witnesses on Parson Street, other HSPD Officers arrived in the 400 Block of Airport Road and made contact with Verbina Latrise Witherspoon, 37, homeless in Hot Springs, and her damaged, gold 2006 Toyota Camry.

Hot Springs Police took a theft report at a cell tower site in the 3800 Block of Central Avenue last weekend.  The total value of the stolen climbing equipment is estimated at $4,000.

HSPD Detective Jessup was assigned to investigate the case.  Det. Jessup immediately began searching pawn shop records and found where the exact, missing climbing gear had been pawned at a local pawn shop.  He went to the business, met with employees an d watched video of the alleged transaction.  The video is said to show that Jason Andrew Smith, 42, of Mineral Street in Hot Springs, enters the shop with another man and the stolen climbing gear.

Jason Andrew Smith, 42, of Mineral Street in Hot Springs – allegedly can’t stay out of the pawn shop even with a court order in place.

An employee at the pawn shop allegedly claims that Mr. Smith said he did not have his ID on him at the time of the transaction and asked his buddy to use his ID to pawn the items; and, that’s allegedly what happened.

Det. Jessup swore out warrants for the arrest of Mr. Smith and went looking for him.  Mr. Smith, at the time (10 days after this theft), was an inmate locked up in the Garland County Detention Center.  Det.
