Tail Light Allegedly Out…Meth Bust; Felony Arrest – HOT SPRINGS

Story by Arkansas 911 News Writer Amanda Goodman

All suspects are presumed innocent until determined guilty in court.

Hot Springs Police Corporal May reports the following:

On 08/16/19 at approximately 0417 hours, I (Cpl. Kenny May #131) conducted a traffic stop on a dark green 2001 Chevrolet pickup truck in the 400 block of Winona Street.

Prior to the stop, I was facing west at the stop sign on Winona St. at the intersection with Central Avenue.  I observed the truck traveling northbound on Central Ave. before turning east onto Winona St. without using a right turn signal.  In my rearview mirror, I then observed the truck to be missing a tail light.  I conducted a traffic stop based on those facts.

I made contact with the driver and sole occupant of the truck (Roberta Shafer).

Roberta K. Shafer, 51, of Linwood Avenue in Hot Springs – allegedly admitted to having dope in her purse during a traffic stop.

During our conversation, Shafer informed me that she had methamphetamine in her purse.  She added that it was in a mint can.  I located the mint can inside her purse, which was located in the seat next to where she was seated.  Inside the mint can, I located a small baggie with a crystalline substance consistent with methamphetamine.  Also in the purse was a piece of cloth wrapped around a glass pipe used to ingest methamphetamine.

After transporting Shafer to the Garland County Detention Center, the crystalline substance was field-tested and showed a positive reaction for the presumptive identification of methamphetamine.  It weighed 1.8 grams.

Ms. Shafer is charged with Felony Possession Of A Controlled Substance and Felony Possession Of Drug Paraphernalia, with a bond amount totaling $5,000.
