Hot Springs Police Officer Ward was dispatched to Summer Street Monday Afternoon to handle a fraud complaint.
He arrived and met with the complainant. The complainant allegedly said that today, he discovered his wallet & contents missing. He explained that he had a sketchy white female at his residence last night, but can’t be sure whether she took it or not.
The victim received notification from his bank that one of his cards had been declined at a mini-mart in Hot Springs. The victim went to the mini-mart to obtain info about the suspect. He and Off. Ward were able to get video footage of the suspect at the store. The suspect was identified as John W. Holder, 24, homeless in Hot Springs.
Off. Ward was in his police car at the mini-mart later that day and the victim ran up and said “there he is..the guy that took my cards” (the suspect). The suspect allegedly came over to the police car and handed the victim 3 of his credit cards and the victim’s driver’s license. The suspect then allegedly stated “I’ll take care of this, please don’t let them arrest me”.
Off. Ward told the suspect to lean against the police car. The report notes that the suspect was acting nervous and clenched his fists inside his pockets. Off. Ward asked the suspect if he had anything he needed to know about and the suspect allegedly said “I found this meth” and took a baggie containing a crystal like substance out of his pocket and attempted to swallow it.
Off. Ward grabbed the suspect and ordered him to spit the bag out. While trying to handcuff the suspect, he took off and ran to Kipps Alley. Officers found the suspect hiding behind a residence on Kipps Alley and he was arrested. The suspect allegedly said that he has lung cancer and his entire body was hurting. LifeNet was called to check the suspect. The suspect was transported to the hospital by ambulance.
The meth baggie was allegedly found back on the ground at the police car.
The victim advised that all of the stolen items had been returned, but he still wished to press charges.
Later in the day, the suspect was released from the hospital and transported to the Garland County Sheriff’s Department for processing. At the jail, he allegedly told police that he was mugged on South Patterson Street where 2 unknown white men held him down, shot him up with meth in both arms, gave him a wallet and told him if he didn’t buy them cigarettes, he would be physically harmed.
The baggy allegedly contained .8 grams of meth and will be sent to the state crime lab for testing.
Mr. Holder is charged with Felony Possession Of A Controlled Substance, elony Theft By Receiving, Resisting Arrest and Fleeing with a bond amount totaling $11,500.
Mr. Holder has been arrested 4 times in Garland County plus this episode in 2019. His other charges include: Obstructing Governmental Operations x2, Driving On Suspended License.
